Remember what it was like having those “special” healthy snacks, either at holiday time or for a special treat? For me, it was apple pie made from the sour, lumpy apples that grew right outside on our own tree. Nothing has ever or will ever taste so good. And nothing can match the power to nourish my body and my soul as that sour apple pie.
So think back for a moment, what is it for you? What returns you to a happy time of family and friends? What special taste lets you know you are loved, safe, happy? Favorite foods are a powerful experience that use all our senses to create lasting memories that live with us until the end of our days on earth. They are a part of you – the deepest part.
That’s why it’s so hard to change our beloved foods, for “healthy snacks” even though our favorites might be unhealthy for us. My special sour apple pie used lots of white sugar, lard and white flour – not really the healthiest combination.
But for years, there was no real way to make sour apple pie with healthy ingredients. Health food stores were just starting to pop up – and there was no internet to find substitute ingredients. Nothing was even coming close to the tastes I loved. Remember trying to use the old saccharine powder instead of sugar? Disgusting.
The great news is that we now have replacement ingredients for virtually all unhealthy ingredients – and healthy snacks are even advertised in tv commercials. Old standby, cane sugar, is being replaced by birch sugar or xylitol. Some people like stevia instead of sugar.
Now granted, xylitol sounds like a gasoline additive – so here’s what I do instead – I call it sugar. Boom! Problem solved. The important thing is I can have all the sour apple pie I want again. I can make my own healthy snacks and load them up with “sugar”.
Lard can be replaced with any number of healthy oils like ghee, coconut, almond and even hemp – yes, delicious, dark-green hemp oil. And forget about it, you won’t get high from it.
Switch out white wheat flour with nearly a dozen other flours like millet, quinoa, rice, or oats that are indistinguishable from wheat and some are gluten free. It is truly a wellness revolution in healthy eating and healthy snacks that is happening around the world.
