Dear Friend,

Remember when you were a kid, and what it was like playing with other children outside?   All day my friends and I would run, jump and dance in the spring rain, summer heat or winter snow?  It didn’t matter – we were having fun!  We were laughing, we were singing, we marched in formation or twirled in our own private whirlpool of giddiness.

We didn’t know “how to be healthy” – we were healthy.   And we were getting healthier, stronger, more capable and coordinated.  For me, it was riding my horse with two neighbor girls and another boy.  Nothing has ever been so much fun, although I’ve had many wildly fun times since then.  And nothing will ever match the power to nourish my soul as the memory of riding through the open fields and wooded trails of Pennsylvania in my boyhood.

So what is it for you?   What turns your mind back to a happy time of family and friends?  What special activity lets you know you are loved, safe and happy?  Childhood memories of a healthy activity create powerful connections that use all our senses to create a total experience that will live inside us until the end of our days.  It is part of us – the deepest part.

That’s why it’s so hard to change our habits of activity, even though they might be unhealthy for us, like sitting at a desk all day, then watching TV at night.  We never had to think about how to be healthy, it was just part of what we did naturally.  Having fun is how to be healthy for all children.

For years, there was no way to recreate the healthy fun activities of our youth.  Exercise and physical conditioning science were in their infancies.  No one was even coming close to having fun.   Remember running with weights or pushing giant tires around?  Not fun and even damaging in some case.

The good news is that we now know how to be healthy and have fun like we used to.  The range of new activities like paddle-boarding, ballroom dancing, Zumba dancing and dozens of outdoor and indoor activities has exploded in recent years.  People are making up their own fun activities like singing tours, group skydiving and even swimming with dolphins.  Almost one of these existed until fairly recently.

How about Pickleball, Tae-Kwon-Do, Tai Chi, Krav Maga or indoor rock climbing?   It is truly a wellness revolution in adult activities that is happening in almost every part of the world.

People are getting outdoors, rain or shine, leaving the computer and TV behind and jumping into so many healthy life-style activities that they don’t even think about how to be healthy – they are healthy because they having fun and being active.

In 2013, this book was added to the Marine Corps Commandant’s Recommended Reading List for all Marine Corps recruits. He is the author of “Mr. Copacabana” (Amazon Publishing), the biography of his father, Monte Proser, creator of the famous Copacabana nightclub.
In 2008, he co-created the highly successful teleseminar series, “Wellness Revolution” with his wife, Adoley Odunton and has been the Executive Producer of that series for their company, Healthier Living LLC.
